Money is a subject that many people think about a lot. This is true whether they have tons of it or not. I get it. Money impacts so many areas of our lives. But the worry, the negative emotions surrounding it, the self-doubt that people have when it comes to decision-making, is pervasive. And, not helpful.
No matter how positive, optimistic, and financially secure you may be, there are still times when scarcity thoughts creep in.
Why does negative self-talk about money matter?
- It feels crappy
- It hurts your ability to make smart decisions
- It impacts your relationships (including with yourself)
Here are 5 ways to shift your money thinking:
1. Notice – The first step is to pay attention to what you are thinking and saying to yourself about your money. Most of the time we live in our stories and believe our thoughts (which can often be negative and not based in reality). One clue to identify your unhelpful thoughts is to watch when you are feeling nervous or bad and notice the thought you had right before you felt that way. Often just noticing your thought will help it to dissipate. If not, see #2.
2. Clear – When you catch yourself with an unhelpful thought about your money, or saying something you really don’t want to happen, stop and say “cancel, clear.” Cancel that thought, clear it away and replace it with something you prefer.

3. Thanks – I know you’ve heard this before … having a daily gratitude practice helps in many ways. Have you added a filter of being grateful for what is working well in your money life? Things like being able to buy food, having a job, a roof over your head, all fall into this category.
4. Share – Generosity precedes prosperity. Go help someone less fortunate. It’s easy to find ways to give if you are looking for them.
5. Pause – Get out in nature. It’s healing and it doesn’t cost anything. Even if you live in an urban area spending time in a park or near a tree can make a big difference. This will help make the other 4 steps work even more effectively.
I’m on a mission to reduce financial angst for people. Especially when it’s self-inflicted. Give these a try and let me know how they work for you.
Every good wish,
Whenever you’re ready …
