Can You Bring More Woo to Work? … And Make it Work

An important key to growing a business these days includes your ability to tap into your inner wisdom, truly trust your intuition and let it guide you toward the prosperity you desire and deserve.

If you’re like lots of people then you’ve probably studied, been curious about, tried or thought about trying concepts that fall into the “Woo-Woo” category.

Wictionary.org defines woo-woo as: A person readily accepting supernatural, paranormal, occult, or pseudoscientific phenomena, or emotion-based beliefs and explanations. It’s considered slang and derogatory.
 
People who successfully use techniques and tools that fall into this category with lots of success don’t consider woo as bad at all. Instead, find great comfort and satisfaction in tapping into other ways of creating the results they desire.

And many of the concepts thought of as woo actually do have research behind them. Dr. David Hamilton wrote an interesting book Why Woo-Woo Works: The Surprising Science Behind Meditation, Reiki, Crystals, and Other Alternative Practices that describes many of these studies.
 
What I know has been true for me, and people I teach and consult with, is that there are tangible results from using concepts such as visualization, exploration of beliefs, creating prosperity pictures, meditation, deliberate declarations, etc.
 
And these results can be significant. Business growth can happen with more joy and ease.
 
Lots of people try alternative business growth ideas and give up. Or they try and miss the mark on the purpose behind them. Or try and really don’t believe that they’ll work for them. Or they don’t take the smart actions needed to get results.
 
Usually with small tweaks the results can be like magic.

Don’t Set Up an Emergency Reserve — Do This Instead

Why do I think an “emergency reserve” is a bad idea? It’s not that I think having a cash cushion is bad. I think it’s really a good thing to have. When there are available funds when you need them, this is a really good thing. It keeps people from using credit cards at high interest rates or needing to sell investments at inopportune times.

What I’m saying is that calling it an emergency fund is a bad idea.

Why?
 
To start, when you build an account with the expectation you’ll need it for some future disaster you are focusing your thinking on what you really don’t want to happen. This falls into the scarcity thinking camp. It’s going against the current.

A recent attendee in one of my courses on creating prosperity on purpose shared an “ah-ha” she had.
 
“My tangled beliefs around money (the ones that I have operated out of until now) included the “fear” that if I “save for a rainy day,” I would create the rain.”
 
This is so interesting to me. The woman who wrote this is very smart, and very conscious. She knows that thoughts create reality. Taking responsibility for your thoughts is fabulous, and examining if they are helpful or unhelpful is important.
 
“During your course, I heard someone say something like, “There is a difference between saving for something and saving to be prepared for hardship.” And now – all the people who are freaking out about the stock market, etc. occur to me as the latter type of people.”

Now – here comes the “Ah ha”…
 
“You do not have to have that ’freak out’ energy – even in this market. Your way of being is of a person who saves, not because there is a disaster that we need to be ready for. Your relationship with Money is healthy, not crazy. Thank you for giving me something to model.”

So, what should you call it?

As we talk about in Picture Your Prosperity, we suggest calling it a “solutions fund.” This is an idea I got from Denise Brown and love it. This is a fund that can be used for all sorts of things like starting a new business, giving you time to find the perfect next job, etc. And, doesn’t it just feel better to have a solutions fund rather than an emergency reserve?

Using This Business Secret Weapon? If You’re Not, You’re Slowing Yourself Down.

Most people in business (and in life) are ignoring one of the most effective ways to meet goals, get ahead, and do so with ease.

What am I referring to?

Your inner wisdom, your intuition.

Here’s what I see in the, what some call, “Woo” community. They make intuition some kind of magical, mystical thing that is only really used regularly by a special few.

Intuition is merely another sense, another way of knowing, that is accessible for you. Everyone has the ability to tap into this. Most people have been taught to rely more on their thinking mind for information – especially when it comes to business. This can be helpful, but if you’re solely using your intellect, your reasoning, you’ll miss a lot of the information that is available to you.

Not using your intuition in your work is like having an amazing assistant, that is eager to help, but you don’t trust them, and you won’t really let them do anything for you. When you do give them a job, you keep double checking if it’s right.

Make your inner knowing your not-so-silent business partner.

Here are some ways to lean more into using your inner knowing:

  • Give it a name – so when you ask for help or acknowledge guidance you know who to thank. Mine is called Susie!
  • Have team meetings on a regular basis with your inner knowing.
  • Ask for assistance, and don’t micromanage – believe that ideas, insights, solutions etc. will show up.
  • If you’re not clear on the answer, ask for another example or sign to confirm your understanding.
  • Ways you can ask for guidance:
    • Write to your intuition when you journal – ask what they want you to know
    • Ask out loud
    • Ask in your mind
  • Be a great listener – get quiet and present so you can hear
  • Trust! Act on what you hear

Please normalize relying on your intuition. If any of you are thinking that this isn’t a business tool you are very wrong. Trusting your gut has been a masculine strategy used in business for years. Please don’t doubt your abilities.

Don’t you just love a book that helps you grow? I’m so grateful for a new idea, resource, or perspective.

Here are a few books I’ve been reading, rereading, and gifting that I think you’ll enjoy:

This is a really well written book filled with great resources to help clarify your purpose. It’s a fast read that I really enjoyed.

 

If your job leaves you feeling exhausted, crabby, and powerless, From Burnout to Purpose is a must-read for reviving yourself on a soul level. There are many tools in this book to help you reduce and reframe burnout.
 
 
I’ve read this book at least 5 times. I find it not only fascinating, but so helpful in moving through rough patches in life and creating more smooth ones. If you’ve read Power vs. Force by Hawkins you’ll love this – more accessible and actionable but equally as mind opening.
 
 

The Magic of Believing

I just had to add this to the list. When people ask me to name a book that changed my life it’s this one. The Magic of Believing set me on my path to think more prosperously and to guide others to do the same.

Worried About the Economy? Try this…

Take a break and let these kindergarteners make you feel better with a pep talk!

Students at West Side Elementary School in Healdsburg, CA set up a hotline to share encouraging messages.

When you call 707-998-8410 you’ll hear the following options:

  • If you’re feeling mad, frustrated or nervous, press 1.
  • If you need words of encouragement and life advice, press 2.
  • If you need a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3.
  • If you need to hear kids laughing with delight, press 4.
  • For encouragement in Spanish, press 5.

Even just thinking about “kids laughing with delight” I feel better!

Please take a break from the worries of the world. You and everyone around you will be better for it. Worry won’t make things better – a pep talk from kindergarteners just might clear your head enough to find inspiration on what will make things better.
