How’s your relationship with your money? Maybe you’ve never thought about it before, but we all have a relationship with money.
If you were to personify “money” and look at how you are with it, would you say you’re in a loving relationship or on the verge of a breakup? Do you look at money as a necessary evil? Or as a loving, caring partner? If you were money, would you want to hang around you the way you treat it?
I believe that money wants to be with people that treat it well and with respect.
Money really loves it when people use it as a force for good in the world.
If you want to grow a more abundant relationship with your money –
Here are four steps to help you along the way:
- Aware – Being aware of your thoughts and beliefs about money is crucial. It is almost impossible to get ahead, build and sustain wealth if you have limiting beliefs about what is possible, what you deserve, and what it means to have money. A first step is to notice what you say about money, and what it means to have it. Do you talk about someone being filthy rich? Do you say things like money causes so many problems for people? or I never seem to have money when I need it? When you constantly talk in ways that make money seem difficult or negative you are pushing it away.
- Clear – The clearer you are on your goals the easier it is to earn more and grow your money. Sounds obvious I know, yet so many people really don’t know what they desire. It is very helpful to consider how your goals will positively impact others. When you plan not only for yourself but also to impact others in good ways your goals are easier to accomplish.
- Care – Positive beliefs and a clear vision are important, but we also live in a material world and making smart money moves matter. Are you good at taking care of your money? Do you spend consciously? Save deliberately? Invest wisely? Are you someone who delegates these responsibilities to someone else? I’m all for getting expert advice. I was a financial advisor for many years and believe strongly in not doing it all on your own. But you must be an involved partner. Whether it’s a spouse, business partner, or professional you must know what is going on. It is your money.
- Share – When you are generous with your money it loosens the grip you have on it and allows more to flow in. What causes, charities, people need your help? I’ve seen over and over that generosity precedes prosperity – not the other way around. When you give to others you feel wealthier. When you are generous, people want to hang around you. They want to do business with you. Being a good giver is hot! You must also be open to receiving so that others get a chance to feel the juiciness of giving too.
Just like with any of your personal relationships…
